The Embassy of the Republic of The Gambia has issued a strong warning to Gambian nationals living in the United States, urging strict compliance with immigration rules amid growing concerns over visa overstays.
According to the Embassy, recent data shows that the overstay rate among Gambian students in the US has reached 38 percent, while holders of B1/B2 visitor visas account for about 13 percent.
The Embassy cautioned that overstaying a visa constitutes a violation of US immigration law and carries serious consequences, including visa cancellation, ineligibility for future visas, possible deportation, and long-term travel restrictions.
It further warned that the trend is already affecting the broader Gambian travel profile, saying high overstay rates could damage the country’s reputation and lead to stricter visa conditions for all applicants.
Officials noted that the situation may also result in increased scrutiny of visa applications, higher rejection rates, and reduced opportunities for genuine students and travellers from The Gambia.
The Embassy urged all Gambians in the US to ensure they fully understand and respect the terms of their visas, including leaving the country before their authorised stay expires.
It also advised nationals to regularly check their travel records through the US I-94 system to confirm departure deadlines. Students and visitors were further encouraged to seek proper guidance or contact US immigration authorities where extensions or changes of status are required, and to conduct themselves in a way that upholds the country’s image abroad.
The Embassy also called on Gambian community leaders, student associations, and diaspora groups to step up awareness campaigns on immigration compliance.
It reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the interests of Gambians abroad while stressing the importance of lawful migration behaviour in preserving future opportunities for travel, study, and exchange.
