President Adama Barrow on Saturday inaugurated the 12-kilometre Brufut–Madiana–Banyaka–Kunkujang Mariama Road Project, describing it as another major step in improving infrastructure and connectivity in the West Coast Region.
The inauguration ceremony was held at Madiana Lower Basic School and attended by residents, community leaders and government officials from Kombo North and Kombo South.
The road project, implemented by SSTP Construction Company with the National Roads Authority serving as consultant, links the communities of Brufut, Madiana, Banyaka and Kunkujang Mariama.
Constructed as a double-surface-dressed road with an eight-metre width, the project is designed to withstand heavy rains and improve long-term durability in the rapidly developing area.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Barrow said roads are not only meant to connect places but also to create opportunities and strengthen communities. According to him, the newly completed road will reduce isolation in Kombo South while improving access to schools, health centres and other essential services.
Barrow added that the project reflects his government’s commitment to ensuring that development reaches both rural and coastal communities across The Gambia.
The road is also expected to improve the transportation of goods and services and boost economic and social activities within the beneficiary communities.
Managing Director of the National Roads Authority, Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, said the road was designed to accommodate growing traffic volumes while improving safety and drainage systems.
He noted that the project forms part of broader efforts to modernise the country’s road infrastructure and support urban expansion in the West Coast Region.
