The Gambia government has renewed the contract of Senior National Team Head Coach Jonathan McKinstry for a further two years, reaffirming its confidence in his leadership as the Scorpions continue their quest for continental success.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on Tuesday, stating that the contract renewal took effect on 1 June 2026 and was concluded in consultation with the Gambia Football Federation (GFF).
According to the ministry, the decision reflects the government’s satisfaction with McKinstry’s work since taking charge of the national team in June 2024, particularly his role in developing young players and strengthening the foundations of Gambian football.
“Since taking charge of the national team in June 2024, he has played a significant role in nurturing young talent and strengthening the foundations necessary for sustained success at the international level,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry noted that continuity in the team’s technical leadership remains a shared priority between government, the GFF and the players, adding that extending McKinstry’s tenure would allow him to continue building a competitive national side capable of achieving greater success on the international stage.
Government also expressed optimism about the future of Gambian football, particularly the prospect of the Scorpions returning to play competitive matches on home soil, a development officials believe will further motivate players and supporters.
The statement further highlighted The Gambia’s ambition to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with authorities pledging continued collaboration with the GFF, stakeholders and development partners to support the national team’s objectives.
Youth and Sports Minister Bakary Y. Badjie and staff of the ministry extended their best wishes to McKinstry and his technical team, expressing hope that the renewed partnership will bring pride, unity and footballing success to the country.
McKinstry’s contract extension comes as The Gambia seeks to build on recent progress in international football and strengthen its standing on the African football stage.
