MoHERST reaffirms commitment to higher education development at UEG graduation

The Gambian government has renewed its pledge to transform and strengthen tertiary education, with the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), Hon. Professor Pierre Gomez, highlighting major reforms during the University of Education, The Gambia (UEG) 2025 graduation ceremony.

Speaking at the historic event, Professor Gomez described the graduation as a milestone, coinciding with the transformation of the former Gambia College into a full-fledged university.

He welcomed the institution’s newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, and the senior management team, commending them for taking on the leadership of UEG’s ambitious transformation agenda.

The Minister emphasized that under President Adama Barrow’s administration, the government remains dedicated to delivering quality teacher training, research, and innovation to drive national development.

He urged graduates to apply their skills in key sectors such as education, agriculture, and health, while demonstrating humility and purposeful leadership.

Professor Gomez also outlined ongoing MoHERST initiatives, including government plans to cover basic salaries of staff in public universities to ease financial burdens and boost investment in teaching and research.

The ministry will continue supporting staff pursuing Master’s and PhD degrees and encouraged students to utilize the Student Revolving Loan Scheme, the Tertiary and Higher Education Trust Fund, and the National Research and Innovation Fund.

In a major boost for infrastructure, the Minister announced engagements with development partners, including the MRC Holland Foundation and Brighter Future, for the expansion of UEG’s Brikama campus.

The first phase will feature the construction of 27 new classrooms. Professor Gomez concluded by congratulating the graduates, faculty, parents, and guardians for their contributions to advancing education in The Gambia.
