Imam Leigh remembers DemboByforce Bojang

Imam Baba Leigh has remembered Dembo Byforce Bojang as a unifier and a good Muslim.

Mr Bojang, also known as Alhaji Dembo Byforce Bodjang, passed away peacefully at midnight on August 28, 2025, at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul. His passing marks the end of an era in Gambian politics, as he was widely revered for his “resilience, dedication, nationalism, patriotism, and selfless service”. He began his career as a civil servant before transitioning to teaching and then politics, where he was a Member of Parliament during both The Gambia’s First and Second Republics.
He was a prominent political figure involved with parties like the UDP and later the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). Imam Baba Leigh acknowledged and honoured his contributions, emphasising his lasting impact on Gambian politics.
“I have known him since 1970 when he worked at the Ministry of Agriculture under the Pest Control Department. Politics was his way but he never allowed it to divide him with anybody. So Dembo Byforce has always demonstrated strong political stance and leadership during critical times in Gambian politics.”
Imam Leigh said Bojang was a consequential politician in the country’s political history.
He recalled the moments they shared in Bakau and at the Gambia Hajj Commission.
“He never calls my name. He always refers to me as “my Oustas”, Imam Leigh added.
He commended the government for the immense role they played in flying Mr Bojang to India to seek medical treatment.

History
The former National People’s Party (NPP) national president, Dembo Byforce Bojang, was a towering figure in Gambian public life whose legacy is defined by decades of tireless service, resilience, and critical contributions to the nation’s political evolution.

Political Leadership and Advocacy
Bojang was renowned for his role in shaping Gambia’s democratic transformation. He gained the affectionate moniker “Dembo Byforce” for his dogged determination and commanding political victories, especially in Bakau. He played a pivotal role as a senior leader of the opposition Coalition 2016, where he was credited with helping to unite disparate opposition groups that ultimately defeated former President Yahya Jammeh and brought about a peaceful democratic transition. Over decades, Bojang’s political path included leadership roles in the National Convention Party (NCP), the United Democratic Party (UDP), and the NPP, serving as national president for both UDP and NPP.

Legacy and National Mourning
At the time of his passing, Bojang was the NPP’s National President and a Special Adviser on Religious Affairs to President Adama Barrow.
President Barrow, among many others, praised Bojang as a “true Muslim, God-fearing and selfless man who devoted his entire life to serving humanity with distinction and humility”. His sense of duty and truthfulness made him one of the most respected politicians across party lines. In addition to his leadership and nation-building, he was cherished in his home community of Bakau as a mentor and pillar of support.

Inspirational Personal Qualities
Throughout his career, Bojang was recognized for his humility, ability to unite people, and unyielding commitment to justice, truth, and progress. Even late in life, he was actively involved in public discourse and was never afraid to offer candid advice for the nation’s betterment. His example inspired generations of young leaders, and his influence transcended politics, impacting both religious and civic life in Gambia.
His passing leaves a profound void in The Gambia. The tributes pouring in from political leaders, the religious community, and ordinary citizens speak to a legacy built on sacrifice, honesty, and undivided commitment to his country’s welfare.
