Africell Marks Milestone in Tree planting drive

Africell, in partnership with the National Environment Agency (NEA), the Forestry Department, and the people of Suwareh Kunda, has planted 2,000 trees as part of its nationwide campaign, “25,000 Trees for 25 Years of Impact.”

Close to 200 people, including children, took part in the activity, turning it into a celebration of community and environmental stewardship. Four species were planted: Mahogany, Beechwood, Locust Bean, and Kapok (Cotton Tree), each selected for its environmental and cultural importance.

With this initiative, Africell has now planted 20,000 trees, moving closer to its target of 25,000 by the end of the year.

The Alkalo of Suwareh Kunda, Ibrahima Suraweh, assured Africell and its partners that the trees will be cared for by the community.

“We had to make sure the children joined us for this because they will learn responsibility. They are obedient and, more importantly, they are growing up with a reforestation culture.”

The event also featured the Governor of Kereman, Lamin Saidykhan, who praised Africell’s consistent commitment to communities. “Any institution committed to supporting our womenfolk is our worthy partner, and Africell has been doing a lot since their inception. I commend them,” he said.

As part of its wider community support, Africell donated footballs and uniforms to encourage sports and wellbeing among local youth.

A final stop was made for a symbolic groundbreaking for a new borehole that will serve Suwareh Kunda.

Africell CEO Hussein Diab Ghanem explained that boreholes have already been built in various communities this year, with a target of 25 communities in total. “Where there is water there is life, and when we plant trees, we are breathing life into our children’s future,” he declared.

According to the Alkalo, the borehole will greatly ease the burden on villagers, who currently travel long distances to access clean water.

Launched earlier this year to celebrate Africell’s 25th anniversary, the 25,000 Trees for 25 Years of Impact campaign is one of the company’s flagship initiatives, reflecting Africell’s commitment to sustainability, connectivity, and community wellbeing.
