Police intercept Senegalese man with $467K suspected counterfeit

Officers of the Basse Police Intervention Unit (PIU), in collaboration with joint security personnel stationed at the Yerobawol Checkpoint, have arrested a Senegalese man allegedly found in possession of a large quantity of suspected counterfeit United States dollar notes.

According to the Gambia Police Force, the arrest was made on Saturday, May 16, 2026, during a checkpoint search operation. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Sadia Ndome from Maleme, Senegal, was reportedly travelling from Basse towards clothes.

Police said a search conducted during the operation led to the discovery of suspected counterfeit currency estimated at about $467,000, along with a bag containing Authorities said the suspect remains in police custody while investigations into the matter continue.

The police further stated that updates would be provided to the public as the investigation progresses.
