The Gambia Teachers’ Union has handed over 36 bicycles to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to support students in Central River Region North who travel long distances to school.
The bicycles, donated with support from the Steve Sinnott Foundation, were presented during a ceremony held at the GTU Secretariat in Kanifing. The bicycles were officially handed over to Permanent Secretary Louis Moses Mendy for onward distribution to beneficiary students in CRR North.
Speaking at the event, GTU General Secretary Marie Antionette Corr said the initiative aims to ease transportation challenges faced by students, particularly those who walk long distances to attend school.
“The demand for these bicycles is very high and their importance can never be overemphasized,” she said.
“It is with pride and pleasure that I hand over the bicycles, and we look forward to getting more support for more students because it is definitely needed.”
Receiving the items on behalf of Education Minister Habibatou Drammeh and the beneficiary students, Mr Mendy expressed appreciation to the GTU and its partners for the support.
He said many students in CRR North come from underprivileged communities and often face difficulties commuting to school, adding that the bicycles would help improve access to education and reduce the burden on families.
Regional Director for Region 5 North, Saikou Dibba, described the initiative as a timely intervention that would positively affect students’ attendance, safety and overall learning conditions.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve access to education and support vulnerable students across the country.
