Gambia ranked among africa’s top 10 most progressive economies

By Adama Makasuba

The Gambia government has welcomed a new continental ranking that places the country among Africa’s 10 most progressive economies in 2026, describing the recognition as evidence of the impact of ongoing economic and social reforms.

The Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, authorities cited the 2026 HelloSafe Prosperity Index, reported by Business Insider Africa, which ranked The Gambia among the continent’s leading reforming economies.

According to the government, the index measures not only economic growth but also how effectively countries convert that growth into improved living conditions for their citizens.

The report highlighted areas such as income growth, human development, poverty reduction and efforts to tackle inequality.

The ministry said the ranking reflects progress made under the country’s National Development Plan and serves as an endorsement of reforms aimed at strengthening macroeconomic stability, governance, social investment and youth empowerment.

“This achievement underscores that The Gambia is on a clear and steady path of progress and transformation,” the statement said.

The government further attributed the achievement to sustained policy reforms and national resilience under the leadership of Adama Barrow.

Officials said the administration remains committed to accelerating inclusive economic growth, creating more opportunities for citizens and improving the overall wellbeing of Gambians.

The ministry noted that while challenges remain, the recognition demonstrates growing international confidence in The Gambia’s development trajectory and its efforts to build a more prosperous future for all.
